In the laser wakefield accelerator, a short ([tau][sub L][lt]1 ps), high power (P[gt]10[sup 12] W) laser pulse propagates in plasma to generate a large amplitude (E[gt] 1 GV/m) wakefield. We present two laser wakefield accelerator simulations, each driven by a 13 TW, 1.3 J laser pulse, demonstrating acceleration of particles to 90 MeV and 450 MeV respectively. In the latter case, the acceleration is enhanced by relativistic effects, but limited by phase detuning due to the reduced group velocity of the laser pulse.
