This patent describes an electrically conductive bipolar separator element for electrochemical cells comprising a nonperforated electrically conductive wall members having projections theron for contacting electrodes of the cells. The wall members define an interior coolant chamber for the separator. A means is included for communicating with the interior of the chamber to permit introduction and removal of coolant, and a means is positioned in the interior chamber to produce differential coolant flow rates along walls of the chamber to produce differential cooling of the bipolar separator.
