Optical guiding and sideband experiments from the Columbia Raman free electron laser

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6658844
Following a brief review of the basic FEL physics of optical guiding and sideband parasitic oscillations, we review some recent experiments done at Columbia using a Raman FEL operating at 1.8 mm wavelength and several MW of power. Noteworthy is a spectrum which shows that optical guiding will cause the sideband to be displaced further from the FEL carrier; the cause is a change in the wave group velocity by the dispersion of the electron beam in which optical guiding is occurring.
