Coal-water slurries

Coal slurries using oil, methanol, or water could reduce the transportation costs that are one of the barriers to industrial and power-plant coal conversion. New coal-water slurry (CWS) technology eliminates the need for oil and the need to dewater before burning. Studies show that a CWS pipeline would be increasingly competitive with rail transport in the Southeast because pipelines are capital intensive, but have little operating expense. Slurries are also easier to transfer to ocean transport, although the 80% solid slurry would need to be diluted for a short distance for loading. Once de-ashing problems are solved, CWS offers utilities and users an easy way to shift from oil. Opposition from the rail industry and the need for eminent-domain legislation have slowed slurry pipeline development, but the economic advantages of CWS suggest a bright future. (DCK)
