As-cast Fe-rich Fe-Nd alloys show a mixture of a-Fe and Fe/sub 17/Nd/sub 2/ phases. No stable Fe/sub 5/Nd phase has been observed in this system. However, very recently x-ray diffraction studies on melt-spun Fe/sub 0.985/ Nd/sup 0.115/ ribbons have shown that the as-spun ribbon has a CaCu/sub 5/-type structure. In this study the authors examine the presence of this phase in other rare-earth iron melt-spun alloys using x-ray diffraction together with magnetic and Moessbauer measurements. Thermomagnetic data show that the Curie temperature of the as-quenched phase is greater than that of the stable Fe/sub 17/R/sub 2/ phase (T/sub c/approx.50/sup 0/C) and it ranges from around 100 to 200/sup 0/C. Hysteresis loop measurements on as-quenched ribbons show a relatively high anisotropy and in some samples a coercivity around 1 kOe. Moessbauer measurements were carried out in both systems. The possibility of presence of the metastable 1:5 phase in the melt-spun samples will be discussed on the basis of Moessbauer parameters.
