When nature loses its cool. [How climatic change is affecting species diversity and what can be done]

Journal Article · · World Watch; (United States)

Species loss, already a thousand times above normal rates, promises to get far worse when the effects of global warming - rising sea levels and climate change - begin in earnest. Only a two pronged stragegy - aggressive efforts to stabilize the climate matched by preparations for the inevidable changes - can give species a decent shot at surviving the coming decades. Site specific research remains crucial to predicting the impacts of global warming and learning how to help ecosystems and species adapt. Only by making diversity a concern on all landscapes, can the migrations of species and communities be accommodated and the options to deal with unpredictable change be retained.
