Pulse radiolysis mated with a recording spectrophotometer was used to measure the rate constants for reactions of HSO/sub 4/ and NO/sub 3/ radicals with metal ions in sulfuric and nitric acid solutions: k(HSO/sub 4/ + M) = (3.6 +/- 0.4) x 10/sup 9/, (9.0 +/- 1.0) x 10/sup 8/, (1.3 +/- 0.1) x 10/sup 8/, (8.0 +/- 0.8) x 10/sup 7/, (2.0 +/- 0.2) x 10/sup 7/, (1.3 +/- 0.1) x 10/sup 8/ dm/sup 3//(mole x sec) for M = AG (I), SB (III), V (III), U (IV), Mn (II), and Ce (III), respectively; the k(NO/sub 3/ + M) for M = Ag (I), T1 (I), Mn (II), and Ce (III) failed to change or increased slightly on raising the HNO/sub 3/ concentration. The rates of HSO/sub 4/ and NO/sub 3/ reactions with vanadyl ion rose substantially on increasing the solution acidity.
