Examples are given of cases in which mediation has and is playing a part in the establishment of environmental policy. Benefits of mediated settlements include savings in time and expense for all parties involved, as well as the ability to accommodate a multiplicity of parties and viewpoints and to tailor a solution to the problem. A more-subtle prospect offered by the process is that in some situations a compromise will accomplish broader objectives to the problem than a total victory in adversarial proceedings would yield.
