Mediation is an effective dispute-settlement process in many environmental-conflict situations. Through the use of case studies one can derive procedures for approaching those conflicts which lend themselves to mediation. Steps that may be taken by a mediator - exploring the issues in dispute; structuring a mediation process including sponsorship, participants, logistics, and issues; and formal mediation - are discussed in the context of the author's mediation experience.
