Retrofitting a district heating system at Co-op City, New York, for cogeneration
About 60,000 people reside in Co-op City and they are provided with a district heating/cooling distribution system, hot water for domestic purposes, hot water space heating and chilled water for air-conditioning of their apartments from a central boiler plant (utilities center). Electric service is provided by the local utility (Con Edison) to a Co-op City substation located at the boiler plant from whence it is distributed to the complex. Ebasco was contracted by Co-op City to determine the economic and technical feasibility of installing steam turbine-generators at the existing oil-fired boiler plant for the cogeneration of all the electricity consumed at Co-op City and, if possible, a surplus for sale to the local utility while continuing to provide heating, cooling and hot water services to the residents.
