Rotary engine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6651029
A rotary engine is described comprising a housing defining a cavity, at least two rotors in the cavity, means for rotating the rotors on spaced axes of rotation and in opposite directions, the rotors having lobes which interact with the cavity walls and with one another to define an expansion chamber, the housing also defining a combustion chamber spaced from the cavity. The engine also comprises a passageway having one end communicating with the expansion chamber and an opposite end communicating with the combustion chamber, valve means in the passageway for periodically opening the passageway to provide a conduit for the combustion gases to expand into the expansion chamber, and the interacting rotor lobes meshing with one another at a point between the spaced rotor axes of rotation. The expansion chamber is provided between the meshing rotor lobes and the passageway one end. The lobes of at least one rotor define the expansion chamber during movement from the point of lobe meshing toward the passageway one end.
