A theoretical model based on the four-level rate equations is used to analyze the four-level single-mode fiber laser. It is found that there is an optimum fiber length which produces the maximum slope efficiency and the minimum threshold pump power of the fiber laser. This finding can be applied to the design of the optical fiber laser and the optical fiber amplifier with four-level material. 8 refs.
