This speech cites effective, reasonably priced freight transportation systems-railroads, water transportation, and future pipeline systems-- as the key to the future for America's coal industry. The full use of America's coal in both the domestic and world markets, combined with modern and efficient mining and transport technologies is discussed as being possible especially if the delivered price of coal remains reasonable and competitive. That the American coal industry and freight transportation systems are prepared to accomodate an expected 85 percent growth in annual coal production to meet new demand in the 1990's is addressed.
