New ideas for cylindrical pipe intakes can help reduce fish and larvae kills

Journal Article · · Power; (United States)
OSTI ID:6648680
Several configurations of older-style cylindrical water intake pipes that reduce impingment and entrainment problems at power plant cooling water intake sites are described. Factors shown to influence the extent to which these pipes can reduce entrainment and destruction of aquatic organisms, such as a uniform velocity and efficient cleaning techniques, are discussed. While cylindrical pipe intakes cannot solve all impingment and entrainment problems, especially for large water flows, they represent a promising alternative to traveling screens, louvers, and other devices.
