Title: Apparatus and method for detecting leaks in piping

Abstract

A method and device are disclosed for detecting the location of leaks along a wall or piping system, preferably in double-walled piping. The apparatus comprises a sniffer probe, a rigid cord such as a length of tube attached to the probe on one end and extending out of the piping with the other end, a source of pressurized air and a source of helium. The method comprises guiding the sniffer probe into the inner pipe to its distal end, purging the inner pipe with pressurized air, filling the annulus defined between the inner and outer pipe with helium, and then detecting the presence of helium within the inner pipe with the probe as is pulled back through the inner pipe. The length of the tube at the point where a leak is detected determines the location of the leak in the pipe. 2 figures.

  • A composition of matter suitable for detecting hydrocarbon leaks is described comprising a dry powder and consisting essentially of from about 0.1 to about 5.0 percent by weight of a dye soluble in water and lower chain alcohols and which is essentially non-staining to painted surfaces, and which does to migrate into or penetrate painted surfaces. The painted surfaces contain a polyurethane or epoxy base resin, and the balance of the composition of matter consists of dry inert mineral carrier.
  • This patent describes a composition of matter suitable for detecting hydrocarbon leaks consisting essentially of a dry powder containing from about 0.1 to about 5.0 percent by weight of a dye soluble in water and lower chain alcohols which will provide vivid color when wet with hydrocarbon fuel and which is essentially nonstaining on painted surfaces. The powder does not migrate into or penetrate painted surfaces containing a polyurethane or epoxy resin base from about 0.1 to about 1.0 percent of a surfactant with the balance of the composition of matter consisting essentially of dry inert mineral carrier.
