Application of continuous infrared instruments to the analysis of exhaust gas
The Liston-Becker Model 15A Infrared Analyzer, applicable to analysis of the hydrocarbon component of exhaust gases, and the Model 28 Exhaust Gas Analyzer which analyzes exhaust gas simultaneously for hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide are described. The installation, calibration, and operation of these instruments and their use for the analysis of exhaust gases are discussed. The results of tests using the Liston-Becker Model 15 analyzer and the Perkin-Elmer Model 21 spectrometer are compared. Extensive use of continuous methods of analysis outlined here has made possible large scale field surveys of vehicle exhaust gases as well as studies of the effect of engine variables on exhaust gas composition.
