Observation on the quantum numbers of linked {ital Z}-string

The quantum numbers of linked {ital Z}-string configurations due to fermion zero modes is discussed. Treating the weak mixing angle ({theta}{sub w}) as a free parameter, we find that the energy is minimized when sin{sup 2}thinsp{theta}{sub w}=3/8 and that the quantum numbers take on very simple values at this value of sin{sup 2}thinsp{theta}{sub w}. In particular, the baryon number is N{sub F}/2, exactly as for the sphaleron. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}
