Hydrocarbon accumulation along the Cumberland Thrust, Bryan County, Oklahoma

Bryan County is in the Coastal Plain Province in S. Oklahoma. Surface rocks are Cretaceous in age and are superimposed over preexisting Paleozoic folds and faults which control the oil and gas accumulation. Cretaceous strata dip gently into the Cumberland-Kingston Syncline, a southeastern extension of the Ardmore-Anadarko Basin. The folds and faults of the subsurface trend northwest to southeast from the Arbuckle Mt., Ardmore Basin, and the Criner Hills Uplift. The subsurface structure which affects the Paleozoic rocks and controls the hydrocarbon accumulation beneath the onlapping Cretaceous, consists of a series of complicated northwest to southeast trending folds and faults extending from the Arbuckle Mt., Ardmore Basin, and Criner Hills Complex southeastward beneath the Cretaceous strata and the Ouachita Thrust Plate. Oil accumulation and entrapment in Bryan County is believed to be largely Late Pennsylvanian in age and to have occurred after the folds and faults of the Arbuckle System had been formed. Shallow accumulations of oil and gas in basal Cretaceous sands may be the result of leaking upward from underlying structures along fractures in pre-Cretaceous beds or they may have been formed in Cretaceous source beds and migrated in Late Cretaceous or Tertiary.
