Solar timetable

Journal Article · · Environment; (United States)
A timetable for making a global transition to a solar economy is outlined by one of the organizers of Sun Day. The schedule shows the adoption of direct solar heat, biomass fuels, and renewable electric energy during the 1980 to 2025 period. An unprecedented commitment in terms of energy and money is needed to bring this about. The technology and social benefits have already been demonstrated, according to Mr. Hayes, but immediate attention by the architecture and engineering schools is needed to teach the appropriate skills. He summarizes the present state of the art of each renewable energy source in relation to its position on the timetable. Policy questions must address the social and economic impact of a solar era, such as the relationship of utilities to solar power generation, the capital needed to buy solar equipment, and the competition with agriculture for available land. 32 references.
