Emission of /sup 24/Na fragments in the interaction of /sup 197/Au with intermediate-energy pions and protons

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., C; (United States)
Excitation functions for the formation of /sup 24/Na from /sup 197/Au have been measured for incident ..pi../sup +/ between 176 and 368 MeV, ..pi../sup -/ between 239 and 368 MeV, and protons between 197 and 800 MeV. The cross sections increase sharply with energy and at any given energy obey the relation sigma/sub pi+/ > sigma/sub pi-/ > sigma/sub p/. The results are analyzed in terms of the contribution of hot-spot and coherent-cascade mechanisms to the proton yields. The role of statistical phase-space factors, as embodied in cascade-evaporation calculations, is invoked to explain the ratio of ..pi../sup +/ and ..pi../sup -/ cross sections.
