The Deep Sea Drilling Project, begun in Aug. 1968, is now 6 yr old. Many articles were written on the original design of the drilling vessel, Glomar Challenger, and the equipment to be used for drilling in water depths up to 20,000 ft. Now, after drilling/coring over 600,000 ft of hole (some in water depths exceeding 20,000 ft), a critical review has been undertaken of the Project's experience.
