A self-gravitating simulation of the M51 system
- Georgia State Univ., Atlanta (USA) Alabama Univ., Tuscaloosa (USA)
A time reversal of the outer spiral structure in M51 (NGC 5194) is presented, showing how the azimuthal angle and time of maximum perturbation can be inferred from its companion galaxy (NGC 5195). An orbit search combined with an N-body computer simulation are used to build the features of M51 from the close passage of NGC 5195. The search is constrained with information from the time reversal of the arm. The results suggest that the extended H I feature described by Rots et al. (1990) is a remnant of a previous passage of the companion. 31 refs.
