The present study was conducted to determine whether flame emissions could be used to conditionally sample Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) data to measure the axial velocities in the flame turbules and in the noncombusting regions separating the flame turbules in a bluff-body combustor. Simultaneous LDA luminosity measurements were conducted downstream of the recirculation at an axial location where the flame turbules were well defined. It is concluded that the LDA data can be conditionally sampled using flame emissions. Attention is given to the employed combustor, the LDA-luminosity monitoring system, the test conditions, high-speed cine pictures of the flame structure, and time resolved LDA-luminosity measurements.
