Large resonance effect in K-shell ionization probability in elastic proton backscattering on /sup 138/Ba

We have measured the K-shell ionization probability P/sub K/ at 172/sup 0/ across the 10.00-MeV isobaric analog resonance in the reaction /sup 138/Ba(p,p) /sup 138/Ba. An excursion of more than 200% from the off-resonance P/sub K/ value permits a sensitive comparison with recently calculated atomic-ionization amplitudes. The effects of nonresonant background nuclear scattering and compound-elastic nuclear scattering are considered. The experimental results are found to be consistent with a negligible compound-elastic contribution.
