This patent describes a hydraulic setting tool attached to one end of a conduit string conveyed into a well. The hydraulic setting tool has a portion thereof attached to a packer conveyed into the well by the conduit string. The hydraulic setting tool consists of an adapter having a portion thereof secured to the conduit string; a housing having a portion thereof secured to the adapter; a piston having a portion thereof slidably sealingly engaging a portion of the housing; a releasable retaining means retaining the piston in a first position within the housing. The releasable retaining means having a portion thereof engaging the housing and another portion thereof engaging the piston; a piston sleeve having a portion thereof secured to the piston and slidable within the housing; and a shear sleeve rod having one end thereof attached to a portion of the adapter and the other end thereof attached to a portion of the packer, the shear sleeve rod slidably, sealingly engaging a portion of the piston.
