Measurement of the lifetimes of the z/sup 2/F/sub 5/2/, z/sup 2/D/sub 3/2/, z/sup 4/G/sub 5/2/, and y/sup 2/D/sub 3/2/ states of lanthanum

The lifetimes of the 5d6s (/sup 1/D)6p z/sup 2/F/sub 5/2/, 5d6s (/sup 1/D)6p z/sup 2/D/sub 3/2/, 5d/sup 2/(/sup 3/F)6p z/sup 4/G/sub 5/2/, and 5d6s (/sup 3/D)6p y/sup 2/D/sub 3/2/ states of La I have been measured using time resolved spectroscopy following excitation by a pulsed dye laser. The measured values for the lifetimes are 120 +- 6, 165 +- 8, 51 +- 4, and 18 +- 3 ns, respectively.
