Results are presented of a systematic survey of {Delta}I=4 bifurcation in 19 superdeformed bands in A{approximately}150 Eu and Gd nuclei. The majority of bands show no sign of this regular oscillation in energy levels. The statistical significance of the few examples that exhibit the effect is examined. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}
