Electric automobiles are touted for their energy efficiency and emission control properties. However, recent studies conducted at ANL indicate that more environmental damage would probably result from the manufacture of electric cars and their batteries than from actual operation of the vehicles themselves. Batteries do release emissions when recharged, although at a low level. Workers will be exposed to hazardous chemicals during the manufacture of batteries, and their protection must be ensured.
