A study was made on the extractability of petroleum sulfoxides (PSO) and their closest analog tetramethylene sulfoxide (TMSO) upon ..gamma.. irradiation. A two-phase system was used, one phase being either neat PSO or diluted with twice its amount of o-xylene and the other an aqueous solution of UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ in 0.1 M HNO/sub 3/, with a 1:1 ratio by volume of the aqueous and organic phases. The PSO was also irradiated in the absence of the aqueous phase. Irradiation with doses of 56 X 10/sup 4/ Gy was found to have practically no affect on PSO extractability but it did change the acidity. Radiation-chemical yields for the formation of sulfides and acid-group hydrogen ions as well as decomposition of sulfoxides were determined. The uranyl nitrate solution lowered the decomposition yield of the sulfoxide groups from 7.6 to 2.6 molecules/100 eV whereas the yield for formation of sulfidic sulfur showed a negligible decrease. The radiolysis of TMSO was studied at adsorbed doses of 54 X 10/sup 4/-3.15 X 10/sup 6/ Gy. Gamma radiation changed the colorless sulfoxide to an amber colored form. It also increased the viscosity of the liquid. Dissolution of the irradiated TMSO in hexane caused the precipitation of an oily fraction similar in structure to dimeric TMSO molecules. Radiation-chemical yields of sulfides and acids were determined. Like the PSO, no sulfones were found. Sulfoxide decomposition yields were similar to those of PSO.
