Reduction of berkelium(IV) in nitric acid solutions by the action of alpha-irradiation

The radiation-chemical behavior of berkelium(IV) in nitric acid solutions with intense internal alpha-irradiation of curium-244 is studied. It is shown that the reduction of berkelium(IV) by the action of alpha- (due to the decay of curium-244) and beta-irradiation (due to the decay of berkelium-249) is subject to the rate law of a zero-order reaction. The observed effective rate constant of the reaction for the reduction of berkelium(IV) is proportional to the radiation dose intensity of the solution and is independent of the nitric acid concentration.
