Slurry phase Fischer-Tropsch synthesis: Cobalt plus a water-gas-shift catalyst: Report for inception to June 30, 1988

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6635653
According to patents from Shell a mechanical mixture of a cobalt catalyst and a Cu/Zn/Al2O3 has been used successfully in a fixed-bed reactor to carry out Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with a low H2/CO feed. In our slurry reactor, however, we encounter substantial deactivation with the Cu/Zn/Al2O3 catalyst when combined with a Co catalyst. A detailed and critical literature review was made of water-gas-shift catalysts. Activation procedures are critically important. Reports of poor performance by other researchers seem to stem from use of too high reduction temperatures and/or improper procedures for catalyst preparation. We have been using commercial catalysts and recommended activation procedures. The slow deactivation we observed may be associated in some way with the use of a slurry reactor instead of fixed bed. 55 refs., 13 figs., 9 tabs.
