The age of the LMC red globular cluster NGC 2173 is estimated as 1.8 + or - 0.7 billion yr by photometry of the main-sequence turnoff. The accuracy of the estimate is limited chiefly by uncertainty in the distance modulus of the cluster. At (m - M)0 = 18.2 the cluster is 2.1 + or - 0.4 Gyr; at (m = M)0 = 18.7 it is 1.4 + or - 0.3 Gyr. The transition luminosity for M stars to turn into carbon stars by the third dredge-up process is M(bol) = -4.3 + or - 0.3 mag in 2 billion year old clusters. 32 references.
