A method is described for recovering viscous oil from tar-sand deposits. A fluid communication path is created in the formation, followed by injecting (through an injection well) superheated steam and air into the formation via the fluid communication path. In situ combustion occurs, providing heat and pressure for driving the oil in the formation toward the production well. Recovery of the displaced oil is accomplished via the production well. The communication path through the formation is created by hydraulic fracturing. (4 claims)
