Economics of natural resources

Book ·
OSTI ID:6633381
This book examines the rate of exploitation of both renewable and nonrenewable resources and explores the theory and policy of resource use and allocation. It begins by reviewing the idea that current trends in resource use are leading the world rapidly towards a crisis of resource scarcity and goes on to discuss optimal resource use from the point of view of both the owner and society. The book then surveys the market mechanism and its imperfections, and the implications for resource policies, including that of zero economic growth. The author concludes with a detailed study in energy. This includes an assessment of supplies of traditional fuels in relation to trends in demand and a consideration of probable new energy sources and methods of conservation. The problems involved in transition to a low-energy economy are particularly emphasized. 193 references, 19 figures, 13 tables.
