Diversification and the Public Utility Holding Company Act

This article appraises the potential of business diversification to improve the financial health of regulated public-utility companies. It also points up the implications of the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935 for diversification efforts of utilities. From a review of events that led to passage of the act and the public policy embodied in it, the author concludes that - amid the changed circumstances of half a century later - preservation of the Holding Company Act serves little or no useful purpose at the present time. 9 references.
