A verbatim record is presented of the March 23, 1979, hearing of the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation on the subject of the roles of government and industry in future automotive development. Statements were presented by US congressmen, by directors of the Federal departments of Technology Assessment and of energy, and by officials of the Ford, General Motors, American Motors, and Chrysler corporations. The purpose of the hearing was to examine how the automotive industry could develop more fuel efficient vehicles which would save on imported petroleum while preserving the mobility of US citizens.
