  1. Advanced Research Projects Agency ( )
The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) has funded Quantum Group, Inc. in an 18 month project to demonstrate an efficient 10 kW thermophotovoltaic (TPV) power generator. The goal is to demonstrate a fuel-flexible, efficient, compact, and quiet power system. The project will also investigate applications of TPV to unmanned undersea vehicles. TPV offers an important and unique opportunity as a new power conversion technology. The enthusiasm and hard work of the TPV researchers at this conference will uncover important scientific knowledge about TPV. Equality important is to reach a basic understanding of where to continue development of TPV. The efficiency, reliability, compactness, fuel versatility, and other qualities of TPV must be evaluated quantitatively to compare TPV to other power conversion systems and identify applications where TPV has a clear advantage to national security or in the commercial marketplace. These applications will be the basis for programs to be funded privately or by the Government.
