When Syncrude Canada, Ltd., reaches its full production in 1981 it will be the world's largest materials-handling system, moving over 300,000 tons of tar sand a day to produce nearly 130,000 barrels of synthetic crude oil. Planning for the startup has taken two years and involved 3000 workers. The economics of extracting bitumen, which constitutes only 12 percent of tar sand by weight, dictated the project's size. With production costs of $9.50 a barrel, the Syncrude will be priced on the basis of imported oil prices. Construction and production details of the project are summarized. Marketing will be done by pipeline to four Edmonton locations, including two refineries and two pipelines. Proposals to expand production to include bitumen processing from a new site are under consideration pending economic feasibility.
