The addition of calcium chloride to isopropyl alcohol (IPA) produced similar but even more defined effects with regard to increased viscosity ratios and the resulting improved displacement efficiencies. The appropriate curves for the IPA to Soltrol C-brine systems are presented graphically. A comparison of these graphs serves to explain why IPA 2 displaced Soltrol C and brine much more efficiently than pure IPA, and even more efficiently than tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA). The favorable viscosity ratio (viscosity of the aqueous phase/viscosity of the oleic phase) obtained throughout the transition zone initiates a higher fractional flow of oil in the stabilized bank. The high favorable viscosity ratio at the front of the miscible zone (viscosity of the fluid in the miscible zone/viscosity of the fluid in the transition zone) tends to suppress the formation of the fingers at the interface of the stabilized bank and the transition zone, which thereby results in the later breakthrough of alcohol. The highly viscous miscible zone material acts in a piston-like manner which is also responsible for a longer transition zone and the buildup of oil in it.
