A better understanding of portable hydrocarbon detectors' strengths and limitations will help operators develop, implement and management leak detection and repair (LDAR) programs. Mandated by recent laws, hydrocarbon processing industry (HPI) operators must set up equipment leak detection programs to reduce fugitive emissions of hazardous organic pollutants (HAPs). Critical to the success of LDARs is selecting portable analyzers to collect emission data. To be in compliance, HPI operators must match analyzer capabilities with process compounds monitored. The paper discusses performance parameters, performance criteria, who must comply, and monitoring methods.
