Chemistry of trace elements and acidic species in fumarolic emissions

A portable cryogenic sampling system was developed for the collection of condensible gases from high temperature fumaroles. The gases were collected in a series of dry ice-cooled cold traps. Particles and acidic gases were collected in volcanic fumes using a series of /sup 7/LiOH treated filters. Sampling missions were made to Mt. St. Helens, Poas volcano, Costa Rica, and to El Chichon volcano, Mexico. The samples were analyzed for over 30 elements using instrumental neutron activation analysis.
