Estimation of relative esterification rates by gas chromatography as an aid in the identification of fatty acids

A simple and convenient method is described for estimating the relative esterification rates of unknown fatty acids. The method involves the addition of a known acid and the gas-liquid chromatography analysis of the partially esterified mixture. The average error between literature values and experimentally determined examples was 17%.
