(Alkane photoreactions with mercury vapor): (Progress report)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6626162

We have learned how to make methane take part in our vapor phase mercury photosensitized dehydrodimerization reactions. Methane has too strong a C-H bond for it to be able to react under the usual conditions. We have found that the addition of N/sub 2/O/MeOH allows reaction with methane and with other substrates having strong C-H bonds. We now have a good mechanistic understanding of the reaction, and can predict the product distributions to be expected for the reactions of simple alkanes.
