This is an improved method and apparatus for introducing a combustible gaseous mixture into a combustion chamber of a gas and air burner for ignition and combustion therein. A gaseous combustion mixture is flowed to a gas and air burner located in a borehole and the flow is directed into the combustion chamber of the burner. The mixture enters the combustion chamber from at least a pair of ports on the periphery of the chamber. The ports direct the flow of the mixture tangential to the periphery of the chamber and normal to the center line of the chamber, causing the major part of the mixture to swirl down the combustion chamber. A small portion of the mixture is diffused to and ignited by an ignition device. This combustion is flashed to the major part of the combustible mixture. (10 claims)
