Title: Package substation system type ENK with SF6 insulation

Journal Article · · IEEE Trans. Power Appar. Syst.; (United States)

This paper addresses ENK design switchgear developed by Brown Boveri and tailored for the 46-72.5 kV voltage level using SF6 insulation for subtransmission systems. The most commonly used switchgear in modular pipe-type designs above 121kV systems is GIS. The ENK design and the standard GIS differ considerably and the ENK design's main characteristics include extremely low operation pressure (only 1.2 bar absolute); cubicle type design; and the use of an SF6/air mixture as insulating medium. The ENK design offers a more economical switchgear type for this voltage range. The paper describes the ENK switchgear technique and its possible applications in subtransmission systems.
