Ferromagnetic behavior of decamethylchromocenium tetracyanoethanide (CrCp[sub 2][sup *])(TCNE)

Studies on the magnetic properties of decamethylchromocenium tetracyanoethanide, [CrCp[sup *][sub 2]][TCNE] are reported herein. Near-zero field ([ital H]=150 mG) data indicates a ferromagnetic transition with [ital T][sub [ital c]]=3.65 K. The temperature dependence below [ital T][sub [ital c]] can be fit to a mean-field result [ital M]=[ital M][sub 0](1[minus][ital T]/[ital T][sub [ital c]])[sup 1/2], and the data above [ital T][sub [ital c]] gives a critical exponent [gamma]=1.2 for the dc magnetic susceptibility. Data at higher temperature indicates a strong 1-D ferromagnetic behavior. Magnetizations at different [ital H] and [ital T] at low temperature can be scaled to a universal function with [ital M]=[ital f]([ital H]/[ital T][sup 3.2]). The reduction in [ital T][sub [ital c]] in [CrCp[sup *][sub 2]][TCNE] compared with [FeCp[sup *][sub 2]][TCNE] indicates a competition between the coupling constants and the residing spins.
