A method and materials are described for improving the sensitivity to detonation of slurry explosive compositions, and in particular, to reduce the rate at which such compositions become desensitized on storage. These slurry explosive compositions have an enhanced water resistance over former compositions. The slurry explosive composition contains at least one oxygen-releasing salt, water, at least one fuel, and at least one detonation sensitizing material. The sensitizer is in divided form and consists of at least one metallic component selected from the group consisting of aluminum and alloys rich in aluminum. The sensitizing material is bonded to the surface of at least part of the metallic component by one of a group consisting of rosin, resin acids, and their derivatives. (11 claims)
