Concept evaluation: recovery of floating oil using polyurethane foam sorbent

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6624469
Individual components of an oil spill recovery system were evaluated using Bunker C oil and three crude oils. The system was designed to shred and broadcast polyurethane foam sorbent onto an oil slick, herd the sorbent to a shipside conveyor by a water spray boom, squeeze the sorbent to extract the oil and rebroadcast the sorbent. The initial concept was to build a half-size, full scale system: however, initial foam losses indicated the necessity for a re-evaluation of the program, and specific studies on the broadcasting and squeezing systems were undertaken.
