The compounds in the series R[sub 3]T[sub 3]Sb[sub 4] (R = rare earth and Y, T = Au, Pt) have very interesting physical properties. For example, Ce[sub 3]Pt[sub 3]Sb[sub 4] is a valence fluctuating semiconductor. The origin of band gap in valence fluctuating systems has been the subject of considerable discussion. The authors have made an attempt to prepare this rare earth series of materials with different transition elements with a view to study the role of the transition element on the properties. Here they report the synthesis and preliminary results on the properties of R[sub 3]Cu[sub 3]Sb[sub 4] (R = La, Ce, Pr, Gd).
