The Maranon Basin of S. Colombia, E. Ecuador and NE. Peru is one of a series of late Tertiary structural depressions which separate the Guyana and Brazilian Sheilds from the Andean mobile belt. The Jurassic to Recent sedimentary sequence in the Maranon Basin of NE. Peru reflects a stable shelf environment of deposition. The sediments gradually thicken and become more marine westward toward the central part of the Andean mobile belt. The Cretaceous rocks, which constitute the main prospective section in the Maranon Basin, reflect one major transgressive-regressive cycle of deposition. In NE. Peru significant quantities of oil have been found in sands of the Agua Caliente, Chonta, and Vivian formations. The present-day structure of the Maranon Basin derives mainly from Andean orogenic movements in Pliocene Time.
